So what thoughts has my getting a NES conjured up in my mind? The thing is a pile of shit. No, I’m not talking about the games; it has a massive great library of classic games that stand tall to this day. No, I mean the console itself. It’s the worst made system I have ever come across.
Today, there is huge wars between Sony and Microsoft fanboys about which console is better; Nintendo is just sort of sitting on it’s number one spot and gleefully watching the silly fan boys gouging each other’s eyes out. Of course there is always arguments at which console has the better selection of games, which is entirely pointless and is a matter of taste. The weak spot that Sony fans always are quick to point out is of course the infamous “Red Ring of Death”. I’ll be honest, I was almost in tears when my 360 did this to me; especially when I found out my warranty was out. Apparently I had to pay $150 to be able to ship it to them and they ship one back. Screw that. As I love to tell everyone I know, I easily fixed my 360 for under $15 thanks to countless guides on the web.
What isn’t as well known is PS3’s die too, and unfortunately it’s not such an easy fix. But to be fair it isn’t as common as the 360’s happy red ring fun time.
What is my point? Well mainstream console gaming has been around since the late 70’s, and system stability seems to be declining.
When the WII first came out, a substantial number of systems were dead out of the box. The PS3, while not common knowledge, does die. And the 360 just is sad. Hopefully the ugly 360 slim will have fixed the problem. The PS2 had problems at launch as well. Hell my PS2 barely reads PS2 games anymore, but won’t even recognize DVD’s or ps1 games. I miss cartridges..
Back to 1985. The original front loading NES console makes me curious how it ever made it out of planning. All of the reasons there is a door and tray are completely pointless.
I first got the NES a few days ago, and it didn’t work. I tried everything I could find, bending pins, cleaning it, and even using sandpaper. I don’t have access to buy a new 72 pin connector so that won’t work for me.
The problem with the NES is they wanted it to be super easy for you to push in a game, while its nice, it was a retarded decision. Slamming in a cartridge is half the fun.
My Master System on the other hand worked perfectly, instantly. According to others I’ve heard, they seemingly always work and have never had problems. The thing has almost nothing inside of it and is by most accounts better quality than the NES. (Again, I’m not talking about game play whatsoever) The controllers on the Master System are however a completely other story.
I know the NES is beloved by many people, but come on, it IS the worst made console of all time. Thankfully they fixed that in the top-loading version. But that things rare and expensive, for obvious reasons.
Anyway, I’ve never run into such problems like the NES, but I know everyone knows that as well. I just was bored and wanted to bitch about it. I suppose as we go on, consoles and the media will become more flimsy as time goes on. Unless of course it is all ruined by going completely digital…
